"Spring Loaded Knees"
 This research project applies bionics to the modification
of knee braces. Bionics is defined as the science of living machines. Animals
have a multiplicity of "springs" built into their bodies in the
form of muscles, ligaments and tendons. In this project we are adding a
spring system to an orthopedic knee brace. The spring stores energy from
the "hamstring" and add the energy back to the quadraceps. This
will not only aide persons with knee problems (arthritis) in standing and
climbing stairs but the spring will act as a shock absorber when descending
stairs or other inclines.
